| ...66DdaQarEMUmvZWMHgObeTRQav6g&oe=6AE095FA | Mike Miller Trail is an easy way to explore Newport’s coastal forest.
Located in South Beach, the roughly mile-long loop takes you through forest, across some small bridges and past wetlands, with benches along the way.
Fall is also a great time to keep an eye out for mushrooms and other seasonal changes along the trail. It’s a good option for a family nature walk, a little quiet time in the forest or getting some steps in after a meal.
Have you walked Mike Miller Trail? Check it out and let us know what you think.

| ...AJtJUB13utJn_xbsWTKfQQw7gyIA&oe=6AE0AB29 | Were you around Newport this summer and seeing more birds than you knew how to identify?
Each spring and summer, over 1 million seabirds return to the Oregon Coast to breed. As we say goodbye to our summer seabird colonies, here’s a quick Newport Seabird & Shorebird Field Guide for your next coastal walk.
🖤 Black Oystercatcher
Chunky black bird with a long orange-red bill and pinkish legs. Look along rocky shorelines and tidepools, including Yaquina Head.
🖤 Common Murre
These black-and-white seabirds can look a little like tiny penguins and are relatives of puffins. Look for dense colonies on offshore rocks around Yaquina Head.
🖤 Cormorants
Dark, long-necked birds often seen perched with their wings spread to dry. Look around rocky shorelines, jetties and pilings.
🖤 Pigeon Guillemot
Small black seabird with bright red legs and mouth during breeding season. Look near rocky shorelines, jetties and the port.
🤍 Snowy Plover
Tiny, pale shorebirds that blend into sandy beaches and dunes. Watch from a distance and obey seasonal nesting closures from April–September.
And remember: birdwatching is best when the birds don’t know you’re watching. Keep your distance and avoid disturbing birds that are nesting, feeding or resting.
Next time you’re exploring Newport’s beaches, rocky shores, jetties and estuary, look a little closer. Save this for your next Newport beach walk!

Female California sea lions and their pups stay year-round near Southern California’s Channel Islands. The males, meanwhile, head up north to Newport to feast in the same colder, nutrient-rich waters where salmon, herring, rockfish and squid hang out.
Be sure to visit Newport’s Bayfront to say hi to the boys!
