data:[...] Base64📢 Will you ask your MP to speak out to protect freshwater wildlife? So far, we have tried to engage constructively with Government on their Planning and Infrastructure Bill, seeing the potential merits of the Nature Restoration Fund approach if safeguards are strengthened. However, we are increasingly concerned by the Government's apparent unwillingness to address widely recognised flaws in the Bill. We urge Government to take on nature-positive amendments, many of which have already been tabled, and avert a significant weakening of existing nature law. Learn more about the Bill and download our template letter on our website. #FreshwaterConservation #FreshwaterSpecies #FreshwaterHabitats
data:[...] Base64💧🌿 In 2024-25 we delivered the second and final year of our Oxfordshire-Buckinghamshire Freshwater Network project, part of the Nature Returns programme. Our work focused on restoring historic floodplains and protecting and building out from the best remaining freshwater habitats across the two counties, including the Oxford Area Important Freshwater Landscape. Despite being a hotspot for freshwater biodiversity, much of Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire’s freshwater wildlife has declined or disappeared entirely over the past 20 years, as a result of pollution, drainage and scrub encroachment. We worked with landowners, public bodies and other conservation charities to create, restore and manage high-quality freshwater habitats. The project focused on the role of smaller, peat-dominated wetlands, floodplains, wet grasslands and small waters in sequestering carbon in the landscape. Key achievements over the two years include: ▪️ Creating 14.5 hectares of new floodplain wetland mosaics and ponds. ▪️ Working with volunteers to restore 11 hectares of alkaline fen. ▪️ Restoring 16 hectares of floodplain grassland. ▪️ Re-introducing more than 1,000 rare wetland plants to their former range through the citizen science GroWet initiative. Nature Returns was led by @naturalengland in close partnership with the @envagency, Forestry Commission and RBG @wakehurst_kew. This Shared Outcomes Funded Programme is sponsored by @defrauk and @energygovuk. Photo 1: Ragged Robin by Mike Pennington, Photo 2: Volunteers at Hinksey Heights by Tim Bearder

data:[...] Base64We're working with @the_allertonproject, the @envagency, @uniofyork and local landowners to test how ‘nature-based’ measures can protect against flooding, reduce diffuse pollution and enhance freshwater biodiversity in agricultural landscapes. This has included installing leaky barriers on the Water Friendly Farming project site in Leicestershire since 2016. Over the last few weeks, we've been investigating the dams to see how they've withstood the impacts of the winter weather and to identify the causes of any dam failures. Through this project we've learned: 🌧️ The air gap under the dam needs to be high enough that water doesn't back-up behind the dam after normal rainfall events. Otherwise there is frequent erosion to the bank and edge of the logs, leading to early collapse. 💦 Gaps between the dam logs are fine - the dam will still hold back water - but it will also allow water to drain away - ready for another rainstorm. 🌳 It is especially important not to skimp on the length of logs, so they can be deeply embedded in the bank - particularly in larger streams with higher erosive power. Find out more about lessons we've learned about optimising leaky barriers to ensure they're long-lived and low maintenance [link in bio]. #WaterFriendlyFarming
data:[...] Base64“Nature is so beneficial to our wellbeing, and people who volunteer in nature really see the positive impact it brings to their lives. For some people the benefits can be a career, for others it’s a better understanding of the natural world around them. We feel like we are playing our part during a time when the world often feels like it’s going in the wrong direction in terms of nature recovery and conflict. Individuals can make a stand through volunteering, and we have become a powerful voice locally for nature recovery.” 🌿 The Hinksey Heights Nature Reserve covers more than 12 hectares and is home to diverse wildlife and habitat. We’ve been working with @hinkseyheightsnaturetrail since 2021, and the group are currently working to improve access to the site’s alkaline fen, one of the richest and most threatened habitats for freshwater biodiversity. In our latest blog, Nick Thorn and Mark Clay from the Hinksey Heights Reserve Volunteers tell us about the Nature Reserve, the work they are carrying out to enhance the site, and the power of volunteering for nature recovery [link in bio]. #HinkseyHeightsNatureTrail #FreshwaterHabitats #FreshwaterSpecies #TheFreshwaterNetwork #FreshwaterConservation
data:[...] Base64The Freshwater Network is a new approach to reverse the decline in freshwater biodiversity. 🌿💦 It will create a network of wilder, wetter, cleaner, more connected habitats for wildlife. Freshwater habitats are degraded, species are declining, and despite current efforts, the freshwater environment remains threatened. data:[...] Base64💧 Through the Freshwater Network, we will bring back clean water. Principle four will restore unpolluted water in the landscape, taking a critical step for freshwater protection. Tackling pollution in our larger rivers and lakes is vital, but we need to give equal weight to small waters. By restoring and creating small waterbodies in pockets of land protected from pollution, we can bring clean water back to our towns and countryside. data:[...] Base64📢 The Freshwater Network gives us a chance to achieve a much needed reset for freshwaters. It will manage waterbodies as interconnected and interdependent habitats, creating freshwater landscapes for effective biodiversity conservation. This approach will enable freshwater plants and animals to thrive, as they need a network of a variety of habitats - not just individual, isolated ponds or stretches of river. See the full vision for the Freshwater Network in our new brochure on our website. #TheFreshwaterNetwork #FreshwaterConservation #FreshwaterHabitats #FreshwaterSpecies #FreshwaterWildlife
data:[...] Base64🌿 Freshwater biodiversity is declining, and we need big ideas to protect it. Through the Freshwater Network, we can build a better future for freshwater. Principle two of the Freshwater Network is to start with the smallest. 💧 It will focus on small waters and wetlands because of their power to regenerate freshwater landscapes. These small habitats make up 80% of the freshwater environment and are critical for biodiversity, yet they are often overlooked. data:[...] Base64To halt and reverse the freshwater biodiversity crisis, we need to protect the best sites first. 🪲 The Freshwater Network is based on four principles. Principle one, protect the best, is the simple and powerful concept of protect first, then repair. Taking this approach means we can preserve high-quality habitats as a foundation for broader ecological recovery. Our priority is to protect the best freshwater sites, known as Important Freshwater Areas. These are the ‘good bits’ that are home to the richest communities of sensitive and vulnerable plants and animals, and are essential for maintaining the diversity of freshwater life. data:[...] Base64💦 Freshwater habitats are under threat, species are declining, and current efforts to fix this are failing. But we have a solution to the freshwater biodiversity crisis. Recovery for life in freshwaters is possible, but we need to refocus. This is where the Freshwater Network comes in. It brings together the best of new scientific research, rigorous analysis of established practices and traditional conservation concepts to build a better future for freshwater. Together, we can create a wilder, wetter, cleaner, connected network for freshwater. data:[...] Base64🚨 The Planning and Infrastructure Bill proposes sweeping changes to the way development’s impacts on nature are assessed and mitigated. In its current state, it will pose a real threat to protected sites and species. We are calling on the government to consider our concerns and strengthen the Bill to protect nature for generations to come. The decisions made now will have a profound impact on the government's environmental legacy, in this critical decade for nature recovery. data:[...] Base64Through the North Bucks Freshwater Resilience Project, we aimed to help reduce local flood risk through the implementation of Natural Flood Management (NFM) measures. Created from natural materials, features such as leaky dams and bunded storage areas were used to mimic natural processes that temporarily store and slow the flow of water. The structures can reduce downstream peak flows and are likely to have additional uplift to biodiversity. Using dataloggers to capture data on water depth, we were able to observe how these features react during storm events. In total, these NFM features will have stored and released roughly 4670 cubic metres of water over a period of 30 hours, and since last September, will have kicked into action up to five times.
data:[...] Base64Did you know there are 500,000 km of ditches in the British countryside? Unlike streams, ditches are usually straight, follow linear field boundaries – often turning at right angles – and show little relationship with natural landscape contours. Ditches are found almost everywhere in the lowlands and also reach surprisingly far up into the hills. They are important because some are truly outstanding gems of nature, and there are a lot of them, reaching into every corner of the land. Because there are so many of them, there’s a good chance that something will turn up in them that isn’t found in another freshwater habitat. 📸 Photo #1 by Hugh Venables
