...ins/youtube-feed-pro/img/placeholder.pngHarborview Medical Center Pharmacist, Tiffany Erickson shares tips for healthcare providers who have patients that might be fasting for Ramadan. Tiffany works at the International Medicine Clinic and she discusses helpful questions to ask Muslim patients as Ramadan approaches. It is important to know a patient's individual fasting plan- when do they plan to fast? How will they break their fast, where and with what? What kind of meals will patients be having during the non-fasting hours? And what is the timing of those meals? What is a patients activity level during the fasting hours? All of these questions are important to consider when adjusting a patients medications. It's best to talk to the patient as far in advance as possible. Medication adjustments make take some time, so it's important to see the effects of those adjustments in advance (if possible). For active individuals who are fasting while managing chronic conditions with medication, it's crucial they know the warning signs—like hypoglycemia or dehydration—that signal the need to break the fast. Please share this video with health providers who are interested in supporting patients who are managing medications and fasting.

Tiffany works at the International Medicine Clinic and she discusses helpful questions to ask Muslim patients as Ramadan approaches. Healthcare providers should note that diabetes patients may consume high-carb foods when breaking their fast, which may require adjusting medication doses and timing. It's also important to remind patients about hydration during non-fasting hours. Ramadan is also a great time to remind patients about healthy diet and lifestyle changes, such as weight loss and diet cessation. Please share this video with health providers who are interested in supporting patients who are managing medications and fasting.

Haddi aad su’aalo qabto ama aad wax tabaneyso, la xiriir dhaqtarkaada. Caafimaadkaada waa muhiim. Nabad gelyo THIS IS THE ENGLISH TRANSLATION: As-Salam-Alaykum My name is Omar Abow, I’m a Caseworker Cultural Mediator and Diabetes Navigator at Harborview Medical Center. As we approach Ramadan, it is important to plan ahead regarding your medication management during the fasting period. Be sure to talk to your provider about your fasting plan for Ramadan, ideally a few weeks before it begins. This is particularly important if you are diabetic or taking a number of medications. Your medications may need to be adjusted to accommodate fasting and non-fasting hours. We typically break our fast with high glycemic foods, so it is important to balance these foods with protein rich foods such as yogurt, cheese, nuts or meats. It is also important to hydrate during the non-fasting hours. This will help the absorption of your medication. If you have any questions or concerns, reach out to your health provider. Your health is important. Nabad gelyo.
