...ugins/instagram-feed/img/placeholder.png☀️ Make sure you're wearing sunscreen every day! Pictured here: RAY-NOX Sun Protectant. This early sunscreen, 10-15% PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid or p-aminobenzoic acid) in an ointment base is a typical example of anti-sunburn creams sold in the United States between the 1940s and early 1960s. 🧴Take a closer look with the link in bio!
...ugins/instagram-feed/img/placeholder.pngAnyone with a Netflix subscription by now has seen a trailer for Apple Cider Vinegar, the story of two wellness influencers who navigate the world of alternative cancer therapy. The show is, in part, a thinly veiled retelling of the experiences of Australian writer Jessica Ainscough who, when faced with a difficult cancer diagnosis, turned to Gerson therapy, which claims to cure cancer and other diseases via a vegan, juice-forward diet and regular coffee enemas. The Gerson regimen is just one example in a long line of cancer quackery. Check out our latest Distillations article, as historian Agnes Arnold-Forster explores why cancer seems especially rife with dodgy cures. Is there something about the disease or its history that makes it susceptible to scientific skepticism? 💊 Tap the link in bio to read now.
...ugins/instagram-feed/img/placeholder.pngThis WEDNESDAY! Join us for a live performance by Charming Disaster at the Science History Institute! 🌟🎤🎸 ✨️ @charmingdisasterband’s newest album, The Double, explores the world that exists behind the one we know, featuring songs inspired by nature, mortality, magic, ritual, and literary genres ranging from science fiction to Victorian horror. Through darkly whimsical songs about time travel, transformation, and the power of ritual, @charmingdisasterband celebrates the strange beauty of the natural world hidden world just beyond our perception—from the familiar trees in your backyard to the fantastical forests of imagination. Before the show, stop by our museum and take a glimpse into our historical botanical crafts and collections. Stay afterward for light refreshments and a reception with the artists. And don't forget to grab a copy of The Double, which is on sale for a limited time in our gift shop! 🎟️Tap the link in bio to grab your tickets now!!
...ugins/instagram-feed/img/placeholder.png☀️ School may be out for the summer, but it's still lunchtime at the Science History Institute! Join us tomorrow at 2pm for a School Lunch Tour featuring our current exhibition, Lunchtime: The History of Science on the School Food Tray! 🍽️ Learn about the complicated relationship between food scientists, the government, and the public throughout the last 200 years as ideas about nutrition and education have evolved. Does school lunch affect student performance? How did innovations in agricultural science lead to the national school lunch program? What challenges do school lunch advocates face today? And why do we have guinea pigs to thank for our understanding of basic nutrition? We will answer all these questions and more! You’ll also have the chance to touch 🤚specially chosen artifacts from our handling collection, examine them in detail, and draw connections between your own experiences of school lunch and this fascinating facet of food history. Drop-in tours are free, and no reservations are necessary! 🥪 Tap the 🔗 in bio to learn more.
...ugins/instagram-feed/img/placeholder.png"Cancer is like this branch of the family tree that keeps branching out...." —Rosemary Cordova, who was five months old at the time of the Trinity test. Today, July 16, marks the 80th anniversary of the Trinity Test, where one of the world's most devastating weapons was detonated in a New Mexican desert, unbeknownst to its many Indigenous and Hispanic residents. Not only were they not informed of the nuclear bomb test, but they were also unaware of the deadly, long-lasting health effects their families would face due to the radioactive fallout from the blast. Since then, the Trinity downwinders have been fighting for government recognition of radiation-related illnesses that have plagued their families, and after nearly a century, reparations may finally come. The Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA), initially enacted in 1990, was reauthorized on July 3, and will increase the number of Americans eligible for compensation for the harm caused by radiation exposure from atomic weapons. According to Source New Mexico, “advocates and New Mexico officials say while RECA’s passage is worthy of celebration, more remains to be done.” The Distillations article "In the Shadow of Oppenheimer" chronicles the intergenerational experiences of the neglected New Mexican communities that lived in the fallout of the first atomic bomb test. This story was written by Joshua Wheeler @jgwheel and photography provided by Reto Sterchi @retosterchi. Tap the link in bio to read today. For further information about the @trinity_downwinders stories and to find ways to help their cause, visit www.trinitydownwinders.com.
