I partnered with @starrosesandplants to plant their gorgeous Bloomables Summer Chocolate Mimosa tree here in my garden — even though it’s not considered hardy in my zone. Am I a little nervous? Absolutely. Am I trying it anyway? Also yes. 😂
Will it survive winter? Honestly...we’ll have to wait and see. But gardening is part science, part hope and part “well, let’s try it.” And sometimes the joy of experimenting is worth the risk.

Microclover is said to be:
🌿 drought tolerant
🌿 low maintenance
🌿 pollinator friendly
🌿 soft underfoot
🌿 steppable
🌿 low growing (around 3" tall)
So naturally... I had to try it.
If you’ve been looking for a low-maintenance groundcover, waterwise lawn alternative or something to plant between pavers and stepping stones, this might give you some ideas!

The loss of the crabapple tree in the front foundation garden gave me an opportunity to create with layers of sun loving plants this time. (It was a shade garden for 15 years.) I used a Crimson Spire oak to anchor the bed. I wanted a different shape, something very upright and narrow and Crimson Spire scratched that itch. Around it are three @pwcolorchoice Glow Girl birch leaf spireas. Excellent chartreuse foliage and clusters of dainty white flowers in spring followed by fall colors in oranges, reds and purples. The outer edge is trimmed with seven @starrosesandplants Apricot Drift roses that flower up to frost and the spaces in between are planted with Monarch Magic ageratum. The two different colored alliums were planted to coincide with the bloom of the Drift roses. For an upright effect that also adds movement, I planted Mystic Spires salvia that will take this border through fall. It should be a beacon for pollinators! As the shrubs and roses fill in over the years, there’ll be less room for annuals but I love them for filling spaces beautifully until that happens. #layeredgarden #gardendesign #curbappeal #chicagogarden #hereshegrows | |

| ...ugins/instagram-feed/img/placeholder.png | I didn’t know what kind of planter I wanted for my front porch glow-up until I saw the @agriframes.us Regency Zinc Trough Planter. They graciously gifted me the large size. I LOVE the very English “lead look” without the lead! And it fits the porch like it was made for it.
The galvanized steel is hot-dipped in zinc and will develop a soft weathered grey patina over time. It’s rust resistant and can remain on the porch year round.
I’m full of ideas for autumn and winter container designs now!

1️⃣ Bejewled Rose Rhinestones penstemon from @provenwinners was sent as a sample last year and I planted it in a very sunny but dry spot just outside the canopy of a very thirsty maple. I don’t have irrigation so that’s saying something!
2️⃣ My succulent container of Skyscraper senecio, lemon coral sedum and crown of thorns is beginning to knit together.
3️⃣ Scarlet O’Hara peony is just starting to open. I need a lipstick in that color!
4️⃣ The name doesn’t do her justice but Wench bearded Iris is absolutely gorgeous right now.
5️⃣ Illuminati Tower mockorange (it smells so good) and Blue By You salvia are on point with their flowering every year.
6️⃣ Arctic Fox Lemon Cream foxglove survived winter and is blooming with Pink Profusion salvia.
7️⃣ I found another All the Rage rose for my patio. Such a lovely fragrance.
8️⃣ And last but not least, check out all that gorgeous growth my Blue Cloak fir put on this spring.
