...s/instagram-feed-pro/img/placeholder.pngThe beautiful thing about a Tuesday St. Paddy’s is that the festivities tend to start the weekend before. And with the exception of the Emerald Isle itself, downtown New York City may be the best place to be to celebrate. Home to NYC’s largest St. Patrick’s day party (c/o @stonestreetnyc), Lower Manhattan is also a bonafide haven for authentic Irish pubs – the kinds of places with pleasantly worn wood bars where you can get served a hearty pint and an order of shepherd’s pie. Many of these watering holes have been in the neighborhood for decades, weathering storms (some literal, like Hurricane Sandy) to keep their doors open and the Guinness flowing. Ahead of the big day, we interviewed the owners of Ryan Maguire’s and Carragher’s at the Irish American about doing business downtown – find those on our website. Plus, check out our full Irish pub list at the link in our bio 🔗 Drink responsibly this weekend, and tip your bartenders! Sláinte ☘️🇮🇪🍻
...s/instagram-feed-pro/img/placeholder.pngFool’s spring, schmool’s spring. We’ll gladly accept two sunny, 70(ish) degree days back to back, even if it’s fleeting ☀️
...s/instagram-feed-pro/img/placeholder.pngJust a bunch of crazy kids working to make Lower Manhattan a great place to live, work and visit 🗽❤️🎞️
...s/instagram-feed-pro/img/placeholder.pngOn this #InternationalWomensDay, we present to you: The Women-Owned Downtown Matrix! From legacy establishments to plucky start-ups, fine dining eateries to beloved watering holes, specialized services to general stores – women are at the helm of businesses large and small in Lower Manhattan. Starting on the left side of the matrix will introduce you to places you can visit for specific or special occasions – bridal shops, fine jewelers, upscale dining and bespoke experiences. Starting on the right, you’ll find establishments that fit into an everyday routine – coffee shops, neighborhood bars, fun stores and more. The top and bottom ends of the Goods/Services axis speak for themselves, but wander towards the middle and you’ll find places like The Little Shop – a bar that’s nestled behind a bodega-type store – and Barclay Rex, a cigar shop that also has a member’s only smoking lounge. All of the businesses featured on the matrix are either fully or partly owned by women, and this is by no means an exhaustive list. Lower Manhattan is the proud home of women-owned enterprises without brick and mortar storefronts, such as financial and legal practices, e-commerce businesses, design and architecture firms, and many more. Head to the link in our bio to learn more about these awesome spots, and as always, consult our Shop Dine Guide for an exhaustive list of Lower Manhattan’s business community
...s/instagram-feed-pro/img/placeholder.pngIf you crane your neck to look up in Lower Manhattan, chances are you’ll be able to see at least one example of Art Deco architecture reaching boldly up into the airspace. The Jazz Age-style transformed New York City’s streets with its soaring silhouettes, dramatic setbacks and intricate design details. Harbingers of the glamour and economic prosperity of the time, Art Deco skyscrapers continue to dazzle and impress over 100 years later. At the link in our bio, you’ll find information on more than a dozen Art Deco buildings found within the square mile of Lower Manhattan 🏙️
...s/instagram-feed-pro/img/placeholder.png‘Twas a long and frigid winter, wasn’t it folks? Thankfully, it’s March now, which should mean some reprieve from the endless snow and sub-freezing temps. New Yorkers know that this first month of spring can bring gloriously, comparatively warm days that make you want to get out and hit the town running. To help you out of hibernation, we rounded up a baker’s dozen of exciting, offbeat activities and events to hit this month. Between Holi, Women’s History Month, Saint Patrick’s Day, the spring equinox, Purim and Pi Day, there’s a ton to celebrate. Bookmark this post or share with a friend, and as always, report back if you do something great in the neighborhood! Subscribe to our newsletter and never miss out on everything we’ve got going on downtown 🍀
...s/instagram-feed-pro/img/placeholder.pngIn a small area surrounded by a low fence right by Pumphouse Park in Battery Park City, you’ll find a piece of history that tells a story of resilience, reunification and hope. When French-born artist Thierry Noir moved to Germany in 1982, the Berlin Wall had been standing for two decades. A dark, concrete symbol of post-war violence and oppression, the wall was built to keep East Germans seeking an escape from Soviet forces from fleeing to the democratic west. Noir found himself captivated by it, and soon began painting it in small segments – the first artist credited with doing so. The wall fell in 1989, marking the end of the Cold War and a seismic shift in global politics. Since then, pieces have ended up all over the world — in museums, private collections, government institutions and, in the case of this particular piece by Noir, on a side street near the waterfront in Lower Manhattan. Head to the link in our bio for the full story 🔗
...s/instagram-feed-pro/img/placeholder.pngHuge news for Lower Manhattan: American Express has announced plans to build a new global headquarters at 2 World Trade Center, marking another big step towards the completion of the World Trade Center campus. American Express will be the sole occupant of the 55-floor, two-million-square-foot building at 200 Greenwich St., which will have room for upwards of 10,000 employees. The building will be developed by Silverstein Properties, with Foster + Partners serving as its design architect. Planned design highlights include more than an acre of outdoor space, with greenery-filled terrace and gardens spread throughout the structure. It will be a gorgeous addition to the neighborhood, as well as an economic boon: The development is expected to create over 3,200 direct and indirect construction-related jobs citywide, with an estimated contribution of around $5.9 billion to the city’s economy and $6.3 billion to the state economy overall. This project completes the commercial development of the site. Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2026, with a planned opening in 2031. American Express will stay in its current headquarters at 200 Vesey St. until the completion of the new building. We can’t wait to see it in our skyline very soon.
...s/instagram-feed-pro/img/placeholder.pngHere we go again... ❄️🌨️ Are you ready for another big storm? Even if you’re not — our tenacious Operations team at the Downtown Alliance sure is. Here they are back in January keeping Broadway clear from the snow 💪 🎥: @find_me_in_fidi
...s/instagram-feed-pro/img/placeholder.pngThere’s never a bad time for a dumpling, but we’d say they taste extra-good in the winter, and extra-extra good in the dawn of the Chinese New Year. Lower Manhattan’s famously diverse food scene means you’ve got plenty of dumpling options within easy walking distance. That’s especially true if you’re willing to be open-minded about what constitutes a dumpling — empanadas, knishes or even ravioli if you’re feeling especially expansive. Here are four spots (among many!) we checked out recently. Head to the link in our bio to read our thoughts on each 🔗
...s/instagram-feed-pro/img/placeholder.pngLunar New Year kicks off today, and we’re so thrilled to see the neighborhood light up in celebration of the Year of the Fire Horse! A time for revelry and joy with family and friends, the Lunar New Year marks the incoming arrival of spring (thank goodness). This one is particularly special, since the Fire Horse only makes an appearance in the Chinese zodiac every 60 years. Here’s to a powerful year of prosperity and change ❤️‍🔥🐎 Photo credit to @rtanphoto for this stunning 2024 capture of @explorewtc
...s/instagram-feed-pro/img/placeholder.png“We all quit our day jobs to work together and sell weed with our parents.” On this episode of “Keeping Up With the Savocchis,” meet Stephanie, Nicole, Daniela, Sarah and Andre Savocchi – the five siblings behind @altocannatribeca, Lower Manhattan’s first licensed cannabis dispensary. Along with their parents, Sandra and Guido, and Andre’s wife Loren, the siblings have curated an incredibly welcoming community space on Chambers Street, a far cry from some of the more sterile dispensaries across the city. Alto means “high” in Italian, and the family chose the name to honor their Italian heritage, specifically their Italian-born father. When the siblings were young, their father was arrested on a cannabis-related charge, which eventually made him eligible for the state’s Conditional Adult-Use Retail Dispensaries license designed to give justice-involved New Yorkers a leg up on the new legal weed market. After their mother heard about the program on 1010 WINS, the siblings, who had long advocated getting into the legal cannabis market, saw their window. We stopped by recently to check in with the Savocchis, a year and change into doing business downtown 💚
